Spiced Slices Ingredients: 1/2 cup margarine or butter 1/2 cup shortening 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 cup toasted sliced almonds -- finely chopped Directions: Preheat oven 375 degrees In a mixing bowl beat margarine or butter with shortening with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add about half of the flour, the sugars, egg, cinnamon, soda, vanilla, nutmeg and cloves. Beat till thoroughly combined. Beat in remaining flour. Stir in nuts. Shape into two 7" rolls and wrap. Chill 5 to 24 hours. Cut into 1/4" slices. Bake in a 375 degree oven about 8 minutes or till edges are golden. Cool on cookie sheet 1 minute then remove and cool on wire rack. Makes about 60 cookies Variations: Whole Wheat Spiced Slices: Prepare as above, except reduce all-purpose flour to 1 1/2 cups. Add 3/4 cup whole wheat flour. Before chilling, roll shaped dough in 2 tablespoons toasted wheat germ. Oat Spiced Slices: Prepare as above, except reduce all-purpose flour to 1 3/4 cups. Add 1 cup quick-cooking rolled oats.
